Privacy
Volt IDE sends crash reports and anonymous usage statistics so we can fix problems and see which features matter. Both are on by default, the IDE tells you so the first time it starts, and you can turn each one off. It never sends your code, your files or your project names.
Turning it off
Open Settings › Privacy and switch off Send crash reports, Send anonymous usage statistics, or both. The same switches appear in the notice on first launch. Usage statistics stop at once; crash reporting stops at once and is fully unloaded at the next restart.
Usage statistics
When usage statistics are on, the IDE sends small batches of events. Each batch carries:
- a random install ID, created on your computer the first time the IDE runs. It isn’t derived from your name, account or hardware;
- the IDE version, operating system and version, CPU architecture and language setting;
- which features you use (for example the state diagram, the serial monitor or the assistant), counted at most once every ten minutes per feature;
- for each check, build and flash: whether it succeeded, how long it took, the chip, and the first line of the error if it failed, with file paths, your user name and numbers removed;
- when the IDE starts and how long it was open.
Events made while you’re offline are kept on your computer and sent later. We don’t store IP addresses: the server uses them only in memory to limit abuse. Events are deleted after 13 months. A one-line record per install ID (version, operating system, architecture, first and last seen) is kept so we can count installs.
Crash reports
When crash reports are on and the IDE crashes or hits an unexpected error, it sends the error message, stack trace, IDE version, the install ID and basic system details such as the operating system, CPU architecture and memory. Your home folder path and user name are removed before sending, and console output isn’t included. Crash reports are deleted after 90 days.
Feedback you send
Help › Send Feedback sends what you type, the type you picked, your email only if you enter it, the IDE version and operating system, and, if you leave the box ticked, the IDE’s log file with your home folder path and user name removed. We use your email only to reply to you.
Where it goes
Usage statistics and feedback go to pulse.voltembedded.com and crash reports to
glitchtip.voltembedded.com. Both run on servers we operate ourselves. They aren’t shared with or
sold to anyone. Traffic to them passes through Cloudflare, which serves our domains.
Other connections the IDE makes
- Updates: the IDE checks
dl.voltembedded.comfor new versions. - Toolchains: the first build for a chip downloads its compiler from our mirror or the vendor’s site.
- Device libraries: browsing or installing libraries contacts the Volt library registry.
- Remote settings: the IDE fetches a few settings we can change without a release, such as the Discord invite link. Nothing about you is sent.
- The assistant: runs through your own Claude Code or Codex sign-in, under Anthropic’s or OpenAI’s terms. Volt doesn’t see those conversations.
- Accounts: signing in to publish libraries uses GitHub, and we store your GitHub user name, display name and avatar.
Checking, building and flashing need none of these and work offline.
